Richard E. Grant met his wife, the celebrated voice coach Joan Washington, back in 1982.

They remained deeply in love throughout their 38 years together, until her death in 2021.

His happy and stable family life with Joan stood in stark contrast to his childhood in the African protectorate of Swaziland, with a violent alcoholic father who once fired a gun at him.

Today Richard talks of his deep love and gratitude for Joan, and how she learnt to accommodate herself to his lifelong obsession with Barbra Streisand.
