Originally from a sheep and cattle property outside Armidale in Northern New South Wales, Adam grew up living through the highs and lows of life on the land.
But a burning desire to be a reporter led him to leave home and study journalism at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.
In 2005, Adam packed ‘the silver rocket’ (his car) and headed north along the coast to Mackay in North Queensland, where he took up work as ABC Tropical North Rural Reporter.
In 2007, he moved to ABC Far North Queensland in Cairns, to take up the rural reporting gig there.
Since landing in Cairns, he’s been working hard to bring to life the issues and stories of the agricultural industries, communities and people of Far North Queensland.
If he’s not on the radio, the telephone or online, you might see him cruising the back-roads of the region on the hunt for unique characters and interesting stories.
Oh, and if he’s hobbling, there’s a chance he’s picked up a sporting injury during his other favourite pastime, playing rugby union.
He’s been known to show up to interviews with a broken nose and a torn hamstring. After a short break in Sydney with ABC News, Adam Stephen returned to the Far North to present Drive, weekdays from 4pm.
