NT Police charge Alice Springs man over fatal alleged hit-and-run crash outside hospital
Northern Territory Police have charged a 59-year-old man over a fatal pedestrian crash, which occurred in Alice Springs last year.
In September 2023, a 48-year-old woman was struck by a sedan while walking along Gap Road, in front of the town's hospital, before the driver allegedly fled the scene.
The woman was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but later died from her injuries.
In a statement, NT Police said the man was arrested at his Alice Springs home on Thursday and charged with hit and run and careless driving causing death.
"Police allege the driver struck and killed the female pedestrian," Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.
"He failed to stop and render assistance to the injured woman, which is the legal requirement of all drivers."
Following the incident last year, police alleged the driver drove over the woman and "immediately left the scene" before later handing himself in to authorities.
They said several other motorists had swerved to avoid the woman prior to the collision, which occurred about 9pm on September 11, 2023.
The man was granted bail and is due to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on March 7.
