Jimmy Barnes all smiles during first Sunday roast since open-heart surgery
By Hanan DervisevicAustralian musician Jimmy Barnes has enjoyed some fresh air and a Sunday roast in Sydney following his open-heart surgery last week.
The singer's wife Jane Barnes posted an update on her husband's social media account, saying he was on the road to recovery.
On Instagram she wrote: "DAY 4. Here we are getting fresh Darlinghurst air. We are so proud of our gorgeous girls @mahaliabarnes & @rubyrodger.s out carolling last night. Here's Jimmy's first Sunday roast, thanks @squeejie & @jimmymetherell. We're a lucky FAMILY. Happy Sunday all you good people."
The post also included a photo of his daughters Mahalia and Ruby out carolling the night before.
The update came after the music icon shared an image of him up and about on Saturday.
"Day 3 post op we had a few walks up and down the hallway, 250m I'd say," it read.
Bacterial pneumonia leads to heart surgery
The 67-year-old last month shared he had been hospitalised and was receiving treatment after developing bacterial pneumonia.
He was initially expected to make a full recovery after a few days.
However, he later revealed he was going "under the knife" after the bacterial infection had spread to his heart.
"[The bacteria has] infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so I'll be getting open heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve," he said in a statement.
Barnes's future onstage appearances are currently in limbo, with his next performance slated for January 5.
"Just a few weeks ago, I was the fittest I've been in decades! Anyway, as you can hopefully appreciate, this has all happened very suddenly so it's going to take a few days to figure out what's going to be doable with my upcoming shows," he wrote.
Barnes family Christmas a 'big day'
Just a couple of days before Barnes became unwell, the Australian music legend sat down with ABC New Breakfast to talk about what his family gets up to on Christmas Day (yes, there is singing involved).
"It's a big day. We're up all night getting it all set up … and by 5am or 6am, there's a lot of prep to do," Barnes said.
"A normal Christmas sit-down lunch is for about 40 or 50 people."
And when it comes to clean-up time, no-one escapes the chores.
"We all clean up. [Christmas is] all about getting in, getting your hands dirty and about the family working, celebrating, playing and laughing together," he said.
Loading...Barnes also spoke about the new version of his 2022 album Blue Christmas, which features three generations of the Barnes clan: Jimmy, his children, and his grandkids.
"We had all of the grandkids in for a day, which was a feat on its own to wrangle that many kids running around screaming and singing," Barnes said.
"We did Santa Forgets, and that song particularly, every time I hear it, I cry. So to have the grandkids there, I'm a gibbering mess."
ABC News Breakfast will play one song from the album each day this week.
