This summer know your ABCs; action plan, be safe, connect with us.
The ABC has a host of useful resources and tips on how to best prepare yourself for emergency weather so you can keep you and your household safe.
A is for Action Plan
Nobody wants to think about the worst but making an action plan will help in that moment, should you need it. Being prepared saves lives and can save your home from disasters, but are you one of the 90 per cent of Australians who haven't made an emergency plan? There's never a good time for bushfires, floods, severe weather or cyclones but most of these hazards will affect communities in Australia every year. Talk with your family about what you will do and make a written plan that includes any animals you have. Put it somewhere everyone can see. Prepare your survival kit with essentials like a torch, first aid, etc. You can find out more about building a survival kit here.
B is for Be Safe
We are here to help you enjoy summer while keeping you informed. Make sure you understand the Fire Danger Ratings and Australian Warning System. Be ready to track fire and severe weather in your area, bookmark the ABC's incident map to stay up to date. Know your 'safer place' if you live in or intend to travel to a high-risk bushfire area. Be aware of how to stay safe if powerlines have been affected during a bushfire. Never drive into water over roads and look out for obstacles like downed power lines, fallen trees or branches.
C is for Connect with us
Stay Connected with the ABC for updates across Radio, online and your ABC listen app. ABC Radio provides regular updates during life-threatening emergencies like floods, bushfires and cyclones.
