Classic Live: Anthony Marwood plays Korngold with the ASO

Live from Adelaide, the dynamic young conductor Chloé van Soeterstède leads the Adelaide Symphony orchestra through an ecstatic concert to fill the heart and soul.

Banner by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's Composer in Association Jessie Montgomery opens the concert. It's a rhapsody on the theme of the National Anthem of the USA written for its 200th anniversary. Banner packs a political and musical punch by asking the question: what does an anthem for the 21st century sound like in today's multicultural environment?

Star violinist Anthony Marwood steps onto the stage to play Korngold's emotionally intense Violin Concerto. A classical Viennese wunderkind, Korngold moved to Hollywood and became one of the early legends of film music. He returned to writing for the concert platform at the end of World War II with this magnificent concerto, which weaves in references to some of his best known film scores.

After interval, a legendary dreamscape by Debussy which kickstarted a sensual musical phenomenon that still echoes today. Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun will leave you lingering at the tantalising, blurry edge of dreams. And finally, Rachmaninov's last great work: Symphonic Dances. Emotion was the beating heart of this Russian composer's musical life, and his artistic honesty and intimacy invite you to share a world of passionate feelings in one of the most irresistible of all orchestral experiences.
