- Police deployed tyre spikes to stop the vehicle
Police say they stopped a passenger van on the Hume Highway near Tumbalong on Thursday morning when it was detected travelling at 144 kph in a 110 kph zone.
Police say the 30-year-old male driver failed a roadside drug test and sped away from the scene.
NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Winston Woodward told ABC Riverina the Police pursuit of the van had to be terminated when it reached road work south of Gundagai.
"There was another highway patrol vehicle on the other side of the road work that again re-engaged," he said.
"As a result of that the spikes were deployed and one of the tyres was down."
Detective Chief Inspector Woodward said the van continued to drive for some time until it went into a paddock.
Police allege the driver and passenger were arrested after a foot pursuit.
Police say drugs found in van
It's alleged 60 kilograms of methylamphetamine worth $15 million was found in the van along with a rifle, magazine and ammunition.
The 30-year-old driver and a 27-year-old passenger, both from Queensland, were charged with drug possession and supplying a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.
The driver is also facing charges over the police chase, including escaping police custody.
They were refused bail to appear at Young Local Court today.
Detective Chief Inspector Woodward praised the work of the police involved.
"I've worked in small towns and I know what this drug does to particularly small regional towns, and I see damage that it does not only to the drug user but it's the families that really suffer," he said.
"I'm glad to see that this 60 kilograms was taken off the street and it's going to go in the furnace."
